Hollstein quotation: "The publishing stock of Frans van den Wyngaerden must have been rich and versatile in subject and design. Together with Martinus van den Enden, Gilles Hendricx and Joannes Meyssens he was one of the leading print sellers of the middle seventeenth century in Antwerp. Like may of these publishers the strategy was to acquire old plates, most by well-knwon artistst, and reissue them by adding his name or address. It is remarkable that Van den Wyngaerden apparently had a preference for the etching-technique (for instance the number of etchings by Jan Lievens in his stock compared to other publishers and most of the etching oeuvre by Willem Paneels went through Van den Wyngaerde's hand). It is not the intention to give a complete reconstruction of Van den Wyngaerde's stock, but like in recent volumes of the regular Hollstien series the scope of this section is highly selective based on several priciples: this catalogue section containes merely the insigned prints of unidentified engarvers, including those after foreign inventors, or from wich a Dutch or Flemish inventor could not be identifeid with certanty. Consequently it excludes all the reissued plates by known engarvers, as well as the prints after Dutch and Flemish inventors following the reasoning that all these prints can be found in earlier Hollstein volumes, either under de name of the engraver or the inventor."
