MARIETTE, Pierre I: Born in Paris 1603, died there in january 1658. Engraver, printer, collector and founder of a big printhouse that lasts for four generations. He married Geneviève, daughter of bookseller Guillaume Lenoir, in 1633. They had 6 children. She died in 1641 and Pierre remarried Catherine, (daughter of bookseller Jean de Bray). She gave him 10 children. Catherine died in the same year as her husband, 1658.

"Marchand taille-douce demeurant rue St. Jacques en la maison ou est pour enseigne l'Eléphant". (1633-1637).
In 1637 Pierre bought the shop and complete stock of Jean Messager, "editeur et marchand d'estamps", who lived in the Rue St. Jacques, à l'enseigne de l'Espérance". Mariette moved his shop to that address.
In December 1657 Pierre became very ill and he sold his business to his eldest son Pierre II for 30.000 livres. He died in January 1658.

MARIETTE, Pierre II: Paris 1634-1716. "Marchand d'estampes". Eldest son of Pierre Mariette I. He married Madeleine de Colemont in 1655, widow of François LANGLOIS, de Chartes dit CIARTES. They had four children. Madeleine died in 1661 and Pierre remarried in 1664 Marie Piget, daughter of bookseller Simon Piget. She gave him four children too.
  Address: "Rue St. Jacques a l'Espérance" the shop had the Latin device: "Haec meta laborum". Pierre II reprinted work of Stefano della Bella.

MARIETTE, Claude Augustin. Paris, born in 1652. Son of Pierre I, brother of Pierre II. He also was engraver, printer and collector of prints. His address was: "Rue St. Etienne-des Grez".

MARIETTE, Jean: Paris 1660-1742. Engraver, printer and "Marchand d'estampes". Son of Pierre II. Address: Rue St. Jacques".

MARIETTE, Pierre Jean: Paris 1694-1774. Engraver, printer and "Marchand d'estampes". Son of Jean Mariette. Pierre Jean travelled in Italy and married Angélique Catherine, (duaghter of notary Doyen) in 1724. With Pierre Jean ended the famous Mariette printhouse. He sold the printhouse to Louis François Delatour in 1750. By the sale of the print-collection was F. BASAN the expert.

MATHAM, Adriaen Jacobdsz.: Pupil of his father Jacob Matham. Born in Haarlem 1599, died in The Hague in 1660. Worked in Haarlem 162038. In 1642 he travelled to Paris and Marocco. He was in The Hague from 1646-1660. Address: "By 't Hof in 't Wapen van Thiel". He married in 1632 Cornelia Claes, in 1638 Annetgen Pieters and in 1642 Leentgen Thiel.

MATHAM, Jacob: Haarlem 1571-1631. Pupil of his stepfather H. Goltzius, (Goltzius married Matham's mother, Margaretha Jansdochter in 1579), brother-in-law of S. Poelenborch. Travelled to Italy. Settled in 1598 in Haarlem. "by de Vischbrughe naest den Calck-hoven". (Jan v.d. Velde II wrote Matham a letter to this address, dated 9-2-1605. See FvdK page 8.) Worked in Venice 1605. April 1613 he lived in Haarlem "op de Oude Gracht" (acc. to a letter J.v.d. Velde I wrote to his son J. vd Velde II who lived in Matham's house. See FvdK page 12.) Matham died 1631 at Haarlem. (Pr.)

MATHAM, Theodoor, Dirk: Son of Jacob Matham. Born in Haarlem 1605/1606. Worked in Rome for the "Galeria Giustiniana". Since 1641 in Amsterdam, 1644-1646 in The Hague, 1660 in Amsterdam. Died there in 1676.

MEURS, Jacob van: Born 1619 at Arnhem. 1638 in Haarlem and Leeuwarden, settled 1649 in Amsterdam and died there ca. 1680. He married as a widower Annitje Philips Goulet on May 15th, 1654. MEYSSENS, (Jacob Mesens) Johannes: Born 1612 in Antwerp. In 1640 he was as painter in the Guild of Antwerp. Thereafter he founded one of the biggest shop in graphic art. Bolswert, Pontius, P. de Jode, Bailliu, C. Galle and W. Hollar worked for him. He also bought a part of the publishing-firm of M. van den ENDEN. The engraver Cornelis Meyssens (1640-1673) was his son. Jacobus de MAN took over a part of the firm (until 1688). Meyssens died in 1670.

MOERMAN, Adriaan:

MOERMANS, Jaques: Antwerp 1602-1653. In 1622 he was registrated in the Guild of Antwerp as pupil of Rubens, in 1630 as Master. He married Maria Schut in 1626. After Rubens' death, in 1640, Moermans was one of the executors of Rubens' last wil and sold the copperplats from Rubens' inheritance. In 1637 he announced that since 1631 he sold copperplates to Anton GOETKINDT (1598-1625) in Paris, for 1200 guilders each year.

MORTIER, Pieter I: Leyden 1661 - Amsterdam 1711. Book- and mapseller in Amsterdam "op de Vijgendam". About 1700 he reprinted Braun Hogenberg's Stedeboek from 1572. He did the same with plates of Frederick de WIT, JANSSONIUS and SCHENCK. His daughter Agatha married in 1721 with Johannes COVENS. Together with Cornelis Mortier they carried on the firm.
